  • *knock knock*

    Ohisashiburi.

    It's been a while.

I've stayed away from Xanga for....ages, and when I came back, I noticed there were a lot of changes. Great changes.

I guess I should come back now, since I need to write more. More nonsense, more inanities. Just...write.

Will come back when things are more coherent in my mind.

  • Is it humility to say "I AM HUMBLE"?

    Just wondering.....

    SO!

Last Sunday I stayed till around 1am (which isn't new, really, but my folks were up at that same time, and believe me, they equate sleeping-at-nine-at-night is sleeping 'late') just to watch the FINAL JUDGMENT of the reality-based star search STARSTRUCK.

The minority, the Igorot, the 'different one', MARKY CIELO won the grand prize as the Ultimate Sole Survivor.

Hah! That'll show them. :) (I am so gloating, I know, but I cannot help it.) See, he won and earned votes and the props from the judges not because he was controversial or he made lots of noises. From day one he showed perseverance and lots and lots of TALENT despite the Igorot minority issue being thrown into his face. And he did not back down. He had no qualms saying he is an Igorot. He is truly the highland's favorite son.

On Judgment night he danced his heart out. His left shoe came off, but he kept dancing with his cartwheels and grooves. That made me shake my head with admiration. As they say, "when you're good, you are REALLY good."

I feel strangely - and pleasantly - weird (strangely weird. that's redundancy if I've ever seen one!) writing about something as light as this one. Maybe I just got fed up with the dirty politics going on in this country. Sure I see the same People Power movements in Indonesia against the PM and his wife....or the demonstrations in Thailand...or the violent uprising of the students leading to violence in France.....

The fact that it is happening some place else does not make me feel a bit better.

Now the humility part. During the Judgment Night, the two (Marky and Jackie Rice) were asked how they expect to stay long in the entertainment business. Marky replied he would do so by staying true to himself and who he really is, and listening to comments and suggestions from people around him.

Jackie replied that she will stay long because she is Humble.

Again. Is it humility to say "I am humble"?

  • Disheartened.

I do not have a problem with ARROGANCE provided it is not unfounded.

The President proudly declares that she is the 'only person' who can lead this country during these turbulent times.

Did it never occur to her that part of the turbulence is caused by....uhm....her?

So February is the 20th anniversary of the People Power in 1986 (an event i do not have clear memory of, since I was about 5 that time, but judging from the repercussions it caused all aorund the world, it must have been huge.) A dictator for two decades was ousted, democracy was established....and it was a bloodless revolution. A couple of years ago, on January, EDSA II took place (EDSA stands for Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, where the People Power in 1986 took place) that ousted another President and installed Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as President. In May of the same year, there was a smaller faction, EDSA III, an attempt to take Arroyo out, but it failed.

Just this February, rumors of coup d'etat proliferated. Paranoia was thick, and the President declared the nation under a State of Emergency. Names from the first People Power, along with militant leaders, were "invited" by the authorites for questioning and detention. No, they say, those are not arrests. They are just 'invitations'. (*rolls eyes*). Picture a respected professor at the EDSA shrine commemorating the 20th EDSA anniversary being taken by policemen who are NOT in uniform, for questioning.

The office of a daily, THE DAILY TRIBUNE, was raided and seized control of by the military. Now note that this daily of national circulation has been generous in producing write-ups that criticize the present administration. The authorities then say they are not suppressing press freedom, they just want to regulate what is released to the public.

I would not be surprised if ultimately, GMA declares Martial Law. It's happened before.

The latest development: Last Sunday, a standoff at a military base, when a Colonel was outraged that his superior, Commandant of the Philippine Marines, was relieved of duty and replaced by another. For hours the drama unfolded. Colonel Querubim not wanting to recognize the newly-installed Gen. Allaga; Gen. Allaga claiming he has everything under control when tanks and militants and Marines are in a scramble all around him.

Geez. I almost wished I were stupid.

The Palace claims that the declaration of state of emergency was needed to counter the attempts to unseat the President and wreak havoc against national securoty. Funny. Things went out of hand when the proclamation was made, because the people got scared Martial Law will be declared yet again. Now which is the precursor here?

  • Games Turn Deadly. Mabuhay!

The RMS TITANIC is sinking. The women and children were made to go ahead on the limited number of lifeboats. Five men of different nationalities stand at the railing, knowing they could never hope to be on any of the lifeboats. (I douubt there was a Filipino on board the doomed ship, but indulge me this one time.) They have no choice.

The Frenchman shouted, "Vive le France!" then jumped into the freezing water. The British coughed and declared, "Long Live the Queen!" then took the plunge. The American was hesitant, but yelled, "Long Live America!" then jumped in.

The Filipino did not hesitate, not even for a second. He roared, "MABUHAY ANG PILIPINO!" (Long live the Filipino!)....

...and pushed the guy beside him into the ice-cold ocean.

    ................................

    *shrugs*

Just trying to inject some humor - though dark and wry - into this post.

You see, this morning, more or less 88 Filipinos died, and 240+ are hurt or injured. My blasted biological clock dictated I wake up at 5am, but I refused to get out of bed until about 10am. I receive an SMS from my Mom (who was in hospital having my nephew checked out), saying I should turn the TV on. And so I did.

And what did I see? Piles of body strewn on the street, with other people wailing over them. At first I thought that finally the rebel groups or terrorists/extremists finally succeeded in exploding a bomb that could actually kill more than a dozen, or there was a demonstration/rally that went totally wrong-er than usual. But no, the reason was far from any of the two, which disappointed me even more.

    So what caused it?

A television game show. A noontime television game show that was celebrating its first year anniversary on an open-air stadium called ULTRA.

Apparently it began as a stampede. Thousands of people were already inside the stadium. And we are not talking about a normal crowd here. Most of them are people from various far-flung provinces, come to Manila for the even alone, probably hoping to score a win. Money, car, or anything, as long as they win something. They literally had to queue a few nights before the actual day, turning it into a vigil.

"Economically" speaking, these people are what the social scientists would refer to as Class C & D. The poor ones. Ergo, their inspiration to brave the distance and lack of money for transport and the cold of the night and the relentless hours....Tension must have been high. The queue was long. A misunderstanding erupted when one file was allowed to go in while the other was asked to remain behind. (The facts are hazy, witnesses were too emotional.)

Hence the stampede. And the deaths. And the piles of bodies dumped outside a funeral home awaiting attention (and identification).

I don't know what this says about so many things. Probably about how the network was bent on gaining profits from claiming they are helping the poor by doling out prizes (implying that they are doing it selflessly when in truth they are gaining from it. Another case of window-dressing one's intentions). Or about how politicians quickly step in as though their interference would miraculously revive the dead.

Or about the extent the poor would go in hopes of a better - and instant millionaire - life.
